What is the PSTN Switch Off?
The PSTN, or Public Switched Telephone Network, is the copper wire network that has carried UK landline calls for decades. BT Openreach is permanently shutting it down by January 2027.
This affects every business in the UK still using a traditional phone line, an ISDN system, or an older broadband connection like ADSL or FTTC. Once the copper network is switched off, those services will stop working. No dial tone, no internet, no incoming calls. ISDN, the digital network many businesses use for office phone systems, is being retired at the same time. If your phones run on ISDN, they go too.
